Dislike Traditional Language Learning?

You’re not alone!

School didn’t prepare me for this

Living in France I realised studying a language for an exam at school was one thing, but being able to understand and speak with native speakers was a whole other ball game.  My 10 years studying French with Mrs Smith hadn’t prepared me at all.

I felt lonely and isolated. When I tried to speak people would look strangely at me and say

That’s really formal, no one speaks like that

And “Don’t over pronounce your words

And most frustrating was “Oh we never use that word, it’s really old fashioned

I remember sitting next to a cute guy on the bus and wanting to talk to him.  I knew twenty ways to send a letter in formal French no one uses but I couldn’t flirt.  I was trying my hardest to think how I could get him interested in me by asking for some stamps but it was hopeless!

Who am I?

Hi I’m Kelly, I live near Cambridge in the UK.   I studied French and German at school but, like my clients, I DIDN’T fit the mould of a language student and so I was discouraged from pursuing this path.  Instead I went into the performing arts which sparked the creative thinking I bring to my coaching.

It gave me the opportunity to live and work in France with people and languages from all around the world. To meet my now husband, a South African, and travel to South Africa regularly.  To keep in touch with my love for languages, and be surrounded by them.

I now spend my time learning languages and helping other people to speak the languages they dream of.

Looking back I guess there were always signs of my love for languages and cultures.  As a child I would read atlases and travel brochures instead of story books, and invent secret languages with my sister.  I loved listening to Spanish music on our holidays though I couldn’t understand it. Even now I enjoy songs in foreign languages more so than in English.

Languages for me are a way to explore. When you learn the language you get a far deeper insight into the culture and people of a country.

I was a teacher – and I hated it!

My work in the performing arts led me to becoming a qualified teacher.  Teaching for 19 years and running my own ballet school. I became interested in the psychology of learning and saw the difference understanding an individual’s learning style had.  I became frustrated with the restrictions of classroom teaching and crusty old-school ideas, and found my love for coaching people one to one.

I’ve always thought outside the box, been a creative thinker, questioned how we do things and found better ways. This means when my clients come up against a block in their learning, or a method that isn’t working I’m able to see lots of ways to move forward.  I’m not like Mrs Smith, stuck on the thinking that we must do it this way because this is how it’s always been done.

How cool would it be if you could order meals, buy things, and ask for directions all in the local language when you travel?
